Product Description
Scrimshaw is the name given to handiwork created by whalers made from the byproducts of harvesting marine mammals Scrimshaw is most commonly made out of the bones and teeth of sperm wales, the baleen of other whales, and the tusks of walruses. Like its life-scale conterpart, this miniature scrimshaw takes the form of elaborate carvings in the form of pictures and lettering of the surface, with the engravings highlighted using a pigment. The making of scrimshaw began on whaling ships between 1817 and 1824 and survived until the ban on commercial whaling. This 1" (1:12) scale dollhouse scrimshaw would be perfect in a dollhouse office or miniature nautical roombox scene. Handcrafted in the USA by Island Crafts Miniatures. Painted Metal. Approximately 1" tall.
