Wiring and Lighting a Dollhouse

Posted by Cheryl Ufnowski on Jan 16th 2019

A customer who is just beginning to build her dollhouse recently asked about a basic wiring kit for her dollhouse.  The name given to a kit by its manufacturer may be a bit misleading to the novice.  If you are new to electrifying a dollhouse you might want to read over this brief intro to choosing a wiriing kit for your needs.

Wiring a dollhouse might be a bit overwhelming or intimidating, but with a little research and a few questions, you can do this!  Give me a call or send an email and I'll help you along the way.

Over the years dollhouse wiring like any technology has evolved and improved.  This is particularly true over the past 10 years or so.  Until very recently, power for a dollhouse wiring for the non-electrician was pretty much limited to an AC (alternating current) transformer, wire (round or flat/tapewire) and simple incandescent bulbs.  With the introduction of computer circuitry, LED bulbs, and the availability of smaller DC (direct current) power sources, your choices have expanded expodentially.  The correct choice in a "basic" wiring system can allow you to install more than just lights with incandescent bulbs if you desire, or simply extend the life of those bulbs.  Today, we can easily install LED candleflame, standard, or flickering bulbs, LED strips for ambient or indirect lighting to complement your ceiling and table lamps.

Your wiring kit choice is totally up to you.  A kit featuring an AC transformer or one using a DC power source.  The biggest difference between the two from an installation standpoint is that when installing a system with an AC transformer you need only be sure to connect the tapewires by correctly matching the color-coded tapewire (copper to copper and silver to silver).  The same applies to a DC power system, but you must also be sure to carry that connection through to the fixtures so that if you install any LED bulbs, the negative and postive connections are properly made.

Stay tuned, more to come...
