A History of Dollhouses

Here's a link to a fascinating study of dollhouses through the decades from 1890 through 1990 by Jennifer McKendry.  While dollhouses prior to this period are often considered a training venue for young girls in preparation for running their own households as adults, most of the dollhouses depicted in this wonderful website are truly toys of dreams and imagination.

Interestingly enough, since the 1990's we have seen a transition of dollhouses popularity from child's toy to adult hobby, generally speaking. But dollhouses still hold that magical allure to most highly imaginative children for story telling.  This is especially true when children are introduced to dollhouses by older individuals who have discovered the joy in building and decorating a dollhouse. I have noticed a significant trend towards renovation and remodeling dollhouses that seem to have skipped a generation and spent a considerable time tucked away in an attic or closet.

In an age of short attention spans, electronic devices, virtual reality, and an unfortunate drop in artistic endeavors, it is refreshing to take this little trip back in time to a period of creative imagination and education through the wonderful world of dollhouses.
