Product Description
One-inch (1:12) scale dollhouse miniature Victorian inspired wash basin and ewer by International Miniatures measures about 1" in diameter (bowl) by 7/8" high (pitcher). Did you know that Victorian homes did not have running water until the 1880's? Before that even wealthier homes had no bathroom but washing was done at the wash-stand, which belonged in the bedroom or dressing room. The wash-stand was a wooden dresser with a polished marble top and a back surface quite often decorated with colorful ceramic tiles. A collection of china vessels including a ewer (jug) and basin like the one pictured here, a soap dish, shaving equipment, tooth brushes, and perhaps a brass can, filled by hand to supply hot water, stood on top.
In more contemporary times, many vintage and reproduction wash basins and ewers are used as decorative elements and often hold bouquets of flowers particularly in farmhouse design.
